Return to the Isle Of Shadows

Artwork

While I'm waiting for Elfwood to approve me as an artist, I thought I'd toss some of my work up here. To explain very briefly, a little over a year and a half ago - in winter of 2001/2002 - I decided that I would teach myself to draw. My girlfriend at the time completely surprised me by buying me a large drawing pad and a huge array of pencils. So in january I started drawing. As you might expect my work back then wasn't very good, although one or two gems snuck through. I've declined to post anything I thought was complete crap, so you're getting a biased look here at those few pieces that while mostly bad had one or two aspects I found appealing.

In any case, I owe a good deal of my initial impetus to get started drawing to Laura, who time and time again surprised me with her love. This little gallery is dedicated to my memory of our relationship together.

Early December 2001. One of my earliest sketches, this was done by continuously layering pieces of this characters armor, weapons and gear atop the earlier sketches until the final result. This drawing probably took around 40-50 passes of erasing & redrawing portions. I call it the shotgun approach. The tricky part is knowing when to stop revising and let it alone. I was lucky with this one.
Lions and Tigers and Bears oh my! I love dragons because they are so much like theropod dinosaurs. Here you can see the influence with the feet and head. For some reason the angel in the foreground came out with a really nice pose. There was supposed to be another angel in the back behind the jumble of rocks just to the left of the dragon, but I couldn't get him to look right, so I erased him completely.
Her name is Lys. A little piece done on the spur of the moment. I really don't know where the moment came from but it left me right afterwards. I've been chasing it ever since. Early March 2003
